神社仏閣の添景を起源に始まった灯籠は、平安貴族により、住まい・離れに取り入れられるようになり徐々に全国へと広まっていきました。その後、茶道の確立とともに露地へ、そして、現代のように、一般の庭園にも実用と美を兼ね備えた添景として欠かせないものとなっています。立灯籠・生け込み形・脚付き形・置灯籠など据えこむ場所に合わせて庭の品格を表すものとして大切な存在となります。
The lanterns which began as accessories of the shrines and temples had been accepted by the residences of nobles during the Heian era, then gradually spread across the country. Later on, with the establishment of the tea ceremony (Cha no Yu), the lanterns spread out further to the paths of the gardens of general public, making them practical and decorative essential. There are different types of lanterns according to the place of installation; Standing lanterns, Ikekomi-gata (buried) lanterns, Legged lanterns, Oki-doro (Portable) lanterns. All of these are valued highly as to show the class of the garden.

島根県宍道町来待地区から産出される良質の凝灰質砂岩を「来待石」と呼び、出雲灯籠や水鉢の原材料として重用されています。控えめで上品なこの石は、切出したばかりの青い状態から、年月とともに茶褐色の落ち着いた色合いを醸し出します。その風合いが庭園にしっとりと落ち着いた風情を添えてくれます。今でも、日本庭園を代表する灯籠と言えます。
The Kimachi Stone is a fine grade of stone made of tuffaceous sandstone, produced in Kimachi district of Shinji Town, Shimane Prefecture, and are valued and used for Izumo lanterns and water basin. The elegant and reserved stone is blue-ish when it’s first cut out, and darkens to brown tone over time. The color tone gives the garden chic and relaxing taste. This is one of the best lanterns representing the Japanese garden.
